I had the opportunity to have an amazing conversation with Shane Monks O’Byrne at Aikido Finance today. Aikido naturally piqued my interest as an investor and Shane, and I eventually got on to the subject of content creation for the finance sphere.
He took the time to talk to me and answer some questions so I could get to know him better and hear more about the things that have helped shape his business success to date – let’s get stuck into it!
The 4-hour Work Week. Everything in the book is gold, but this dream equation really stands out:
1. Limit tasks to the important to shorten work time (Pareto’s principle or the 80/20 split).
2. Shorten work time to limit tasks to the important (Parkinson’s law).
My Standing desk! Mood increased, fitter, happier. The full package!!
Take a walk into the hills for an hour and meditate as I walk. Nature and exercise always help. (Also if I need to be really productive…techno and coffee will get me into flow-state pretty fast)!
I adopted the use of a bullet journal. It helps me prioritise what I will do this year, month, week, and day. I used to use a personal scrum board to manage my life, now all I need is my little bullet journal which has to-do lists, morning journals, quotes, and general journal entries.
“Bark Less, Wag More”.
I bought the book What Works on Wall Street by James O’Shaughnessy. It is the single book that has changed my life the most. I changed the way I invest and started my current company because of this book.
I changed from a qualitative investor into a quantitative investor. It is essentially a recipe book for which investing strategies have actually worked – back-tested since 1930 (or something crazy like that).
Some of the strategies we have on Aikido are inspired by strategies found in this book.
Utilise the fact that you live in an age where you can travel the world and at the same time have a full-time job.
Never before in history has it been possible for anyone to do! Hotspot internet and remote working capabilities are currently evolving our work-life. I live in my campervan full-time, at the same time, I run my investor-funded startup on top of lots of little side hustles.
I ski, climb, surf, or go running whenever I like, travel to beautiful locations and have lots of time to work on my passions too!

I’m currently training to be a mountain guide – it’s a long journey, but I dream of taking people into the alpine professionally.
Use loss aversion to your advantage. I use Beeminder as a way of keeping up with my good habits. I won’t explain here what the site does, or I’ll sound like a psycho, but check it out. It’s VERY powerful.
Chamonix, France. The mountaineering mecca of the world.
