A Fireside Chat

I had the opportunity to have an amazing conversation with Laura Bony at OnCrawl today. I was aware of OnCrawl for search engine optimisation before I met Laura.

When we did speak, Laura took the time to talk to me and answer some questions so I could get to know her better and hear more about the things that have helped shape her business success to date – let’s get stuck into it!

What Is The Book (Or Books) You’ve Given Most As A Gift, And Why?

I travel a lot because of my job (or used to travel a lot because 2020 has changed a lot of things) and I’ve gotten into the routine of buying a new book at the airport before each departure.

So it’s at the airport that I found the books that have influenced me the most lately: Pathway to God by Mahatma Gandhi; Super Genes by Deepak Chopra; and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. All these books are highly philosophical and spiritual. They eventually helped me to take a step back, to broaden my ideas and be more in the present moment!

How Has A Failure, Or Apparent Failure, Set You Up For Later Success?

It’s hard to pick only one failure but after failing multiple times! I’d say that I now see each and every failure as a lesson. Every time I fail, I give myself just enough time to be sad or mad and immediately after start learning from it: what should I do differently next time?

Plus, as grown-ups, failure is almost our only way to progress since it means that we have tried and learned something new.

When You Feel Overwhelmed Or Unfocused, Or Have Lost Your Focus Temporarily, What Do You Do?

When I feel overwhelmed, I focus on my breath and ask myself to come back to the present moment. With some practice, after reminding myself to focus on what I’m currently doing, my “monkey mind” eventually calms down so I can find my stillness and focus again.

In The Last Five Years, What New Belief, Behavior, Or Habit Has Most Improved Your Life?

Yoga and meditation. After deciding that it wasn’t for me for years, I gave it a try three years ago and eventually became a yoga teacher myself.

The benefits are so tremendous in all areas of my life that I found it easy to stick to. Yoga and meditation are very personal practices, there is no right or wrong way to do it, and most importantly, there are absolutely no prerequisites to get started (which is a common misconception).

ENTERING THE CORPORATE WORLD REQUIRES A BALANCE BETWEEN HUMILITY & SELF-CONFIDENCE.

- LAURA BONY

What Advice Would You Give To A Smart, Driven College Student About To Enter The “Real World”? What Advice Should They Ignore?

Entering the corporate world requires a balance between humility and self-confidence. Take advice from people who really want you to succeed and remain trustful in the face of people who play you off.

Tell Us About Your Business. What Does It Do And What Value Do You Add?

OnCrawl is an SEO platform for audits, monitoring, prediction and automation. Awarded Best Global SEO Tool in 2020, we help SEO professionals get the most value and insights from their data. I’m OnCrawl’s Head of Sales, and I drive the company’s growth in the North American markets.

Where Do You See Your Industry In The Next 5 Years?

The SEO industry is changing very fast. One of the major changes we are anticipating is applying data science to our profession, to build predictive SEO models for website growth.

One of the challenges to overcome today is the quality and availability of data. We’ve already accompanied many companies in the first steps to collect, process, and reuse SEO data in data warehouses with many other types of data. The key to this step is not just being able to analyse the data but also making data meaningful.

What Is A 'Hack' You Have For Success That Most People Don't Know About?

Empathy. There are a lot of preconceptions around this, and one of them is that being empathetic is synonymous with weakness.

But I think that it’s a complete opposite: being emphatic is to be emotionally intelligent, it’s a quality that must be cultivated as a strength to better “read” people and become a better consultant and leader.

How Has Covid-19 Changed Your Industry?

Because we all work in SEO, which is the organic promotion of a website, we’ve been very influenced by how Covid-19 has pushed a lot of activity online. Whether it’s learning, socialising, shopping, or just looking for information, the patterns in how people search and visit websites have changed.

Our clients have seen unprecedented peaks and drops, and are often working from home where they’ve had to restructure teamwork in addition to their SEO strategy. Because of the upheavals this year, finding new, data-based ways to predict website traffic and rankings and to understand trends is no longer just a luxury.

What Is The Most Surprising Thing You've Seen In Your Industry?

I’m impressed by the creativity of my peers. Be it, my colleagues or clients, people often have surprising superpowers on the side in addition to their day jobs, such as being DJs, singers, musicians, bakers…

It’s very inspiring and encouraging to see so many offline skills and passions because we’re all hooked up to our computers all day long.
