A Fireside Chat

I had the opportunity to have an amazing conversation with Kevin Miller at Kevin Miller today. From talking about SEO for Reputation Management sites, Kevin agreed to a quick interview.

He took the time to talk to me and answer some questions so I could get to know him better and hear more about the things that have helped shape his business success to date – let’s get stuck into it!

What Is The Book (Or Books) You’ve Given Most As A Gift, And Why?

A Million Miles In A Thousand Years by Donald Miller, I’ve given away cases, it’s about living a better story and to me spoke much to the Man In The Arena perspective of living life and not being a spectator. Also given away many of Food Rules by Michael Pollan as it’s such a great primer for healthy eating. Books that have influenced my life…See You At The Top by Zig Ziglar, How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie and recently, Awareness by Anthony de Mello.

What Purchase Of $100 Or Less Has Most Positively Impacted Your Life In The Last Six Months?

$100 is not enough… Actually, for $85 each I got my 15 and 16 year old boys, Garmin Forerunner 35 watches so they can track and be accountable to their sleep and exercise. For myself, a $20 Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint Foot Drop Orthotic Brace. I’ve been suffering from plantar fasciitis for over a year and this is keeping it at bay

When You Feel Overwhelmed Or Unfocused, Or Have Lost Your Focus Temporarily, What Do You Do?

Find the right music to lift my mood or inspire me. Or do a brain dump list to get everything out of my mind. But mostly, go for a trail run or mountain bike ride. That is most beneficial to me. Get in the remote woods alone and in my flow of physical exertion.

What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?

“You just have to want it more!” It rings false. You just need to want it authentically and you need to dig in and clarify your motives.

In this life will you be a participant or just a spectator?

- Kevin Miller

In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

I’m not responsible for other’s feelings or behavior. I really suffer from a “God complex” in taking way too much responsibility for others, my family, consulting clients, employees…you name it. Learning to let that go and also realize, I’m not God or Superman. I’m not limitless, has helped.

What Is One Of The Best Or Most Worthwhile Investments You’ve Ever Made?

Mountain bikes and running shoes and the investment to get away and just be me. Kevin. I love taking off on my own and being an individual. A long morning of thinking, pondering, and writing about what matters. Then long runs and rides in epic Rocky Mountain destinations. Then an excellent meal and maybe an inspiring movie. Time alone refuels me like nothing else.

If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it — what would it say and why?

In this life, will you be a participant or just a spectator? Our world is ebbing away from doing real life and meaningful pursuits and trading it for a shallow, voyeuristic existence. And existent that is not…true life.

What careers advice would you give to your 21-year old self?

Except for short times of survival, never work at something you don’t care about. Whatever product or service is being provided, make sure you give a crap about it, beyond the job and pay.

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? Do you have a “favourite failure” of yours?

A good friend of mine (now) used to be my boss. He fired me. At the time? Terrible. In hindsight? It was the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me realize that being self-employed and then an entrepreneur was the path for me. No looking back. I couldn’t love him more for firing me 🙂

What advice would you give to a smart, driven college student about to enter the “real world”? What advice should they ignore?

Audit what you think you want by getting crystal clear on your motives for wanting it. So few youths or people in general, ever truly consider what they want, but even if they do, they don’t go deeper into their reasons for wanting it that will reveal what they truly want for themselves as opposed to things they think they want but are expectations derived from other sources.

Tell Us About Your Business. What Does It Do And What Value Do You Add?

I want to grow and become better every day, and it’s what I most want for others. I have three podcasts where this is the sole focus, the Motive podcast, True Life podcast, and The Ziglar Show. I’m laser-focused on root cause issues of human behavior and motivation.

What is the most significant thing that someone much younger than yourself has taught you?

My kids have grown so much needed patience and grace in me that I was sorely lacking.

Tell us about someone you admire and why you admire them?

Author Charles Martin. His skill and insight into human emotions and relations that he puts into his novels just amazes me.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I just turned 50 and have a book deal and book in the works. I wonder if I would have been better served to pursue traditional writing as my main profession, from a much earlier age.

Where do you see your industry in the next 5 years?

I really don’t know.

What is a 'hack' you have for success that most people don't know about?

I don’t believe there are any hacks. But a primary value is just personal fitness and wellness, as it fosters a better running mind.

What's your favourite digital marketing channel and why?

Home. We do the holidays so fantastically.

What is a useful skill someone could learn in one minute?

Smile. If anyone makes eye contact with you, brighten up and shine at them. I’m an introvert and don’t even care to see other people, but if eyes meet…smile. It’s becoming a lost art.

When did you first become a rebel?

Fourth or fifth grade in a bad school situation, I developed a strong disdain and resistance to authority that still runs strong today. But my upbringing fostered rebellion against the norm as well, so this vein is a bit overkill in me by nature.

What popular celebrity do you admire the most and why?

I’m amazed at the range and character of Hugh Jackman.

What's your favourite holiday destination?

Sunny Isles, Florida… I am a simple human being.

What's something exciting you're currently working on/learning that only a few people know about?

Learning more about the emotions and wiring created in kids who are adopted. I have two but I’m not very vocal about it publicly. Learning more about healthy attachment is significant for everyone.

What one thing in life do you consider to be overrated?

Entertainment.

What are you NOT Very Good at?

Finances, money, numbers. Really bad.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

Little shake of chia and hemp seeds, coconut milk, collagen powder, frozen blueberries, and almond butter.

What one song can you listen to every day non-stop?

A adore music. Adore it. I listen almost all day long. But the glory is in a moment by moment eclectic journey, there is no song I want to hear even twice in a row.
