I had the opportunity to have an amazing conversation with John Shea at Viper Copy today. From talking about SEO for Marketing sites, John agreed to a quick interview.

He took the time to talk to me and answer some questions so I could get to know him better and hear more about the things that have helped shape his business success to date – let’s get stuck into it!

What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?

Just the general idea that you always need to be working more and working harder, I didn’t get into entrepreneurship to work hard non-stop.

- John Shea

In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

Just having the mindset that I can achieve bigger things, and charge more for my work.

What is one of the best or most worthwhile investments you’ve ever made?

I actually have no idea, I think if it wasn’t for monetizing I’d share the quote “You are most like the 5 people you spend the most time with“.

When did you first become a rebel?

Probably that job I took right after finishing college at the clothing store. I was a stocker, and I spent one morning in a back closet sleeping in a pile of clothes because I was so tired.

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? Do you have a “favourite failure” of yours?

I’ve had so many of them, I think my biggest was attempting to use freelance sites to get clients, giving up after going at it on my own for a month and then finally hiring a mentor to see it through and figure it out.

What advice would you give to a smart, driven college student about to enter the “real world”? What advice should they ignore?

I really don’t know.
